How to Source Bags From China: An 8-Step Buyer's Checklist

Sourcing bags from China works best when you treat it as a sequence of checkpoints rather than a single purchase. This guide walks through specification, factory vetting, quotation comparison, sampling, quality control and shipping — with the concrete numbers a first-time buyer needs.

Five content pillars for bag buyers

Sourcing & importing

Finding a real factory rather than an agent, comparing quotations properly, and avoiding the common traps in first-time bag sourcing.

Materials & construction

PU, synthetic leather, genuine leather, polyester, nylon and canvas — how denier, coating and hardware choices change the finished product.

Quality control & inspection

What AQL sampling actually means, which checkpoints matter for bags, and how to specify inspection so it protects you.

Costing & quotation

How unit cost is built, why short runs cost more per piece, and what a factory needs before it can quote accurately.

OEM, ODM & development

Choosing between building to your own design and developing one with the factory — and what each route demands from you.

Quick answers

Popular sourcing questions, answered briefly

How do I source bags from China?

Five steps: define the specification, shortlist factories rather than agents, compare quotations on identical specs, order and approve a physical sample, then agree inspection and shipping terms before production starts. Most sourcing failures trace back to skipping step four.

What MOQ and lead times should I expect?

MOQ varies widely by factory — Eighteen Craft works from approximately 500 pieces per style. Sampling typically takes 7–12 days, and bulk production typically runs 25–40 days after written sample approval, not after your order is placed.

Which Incoterm should a bag importer use?

EXW puts all freight responsibility on you and suits buyers with an established forwarder. FOB — the default for most bag orders — means the factory delivers to the port and you take over from there. DDP shifts everything to the seller but hides the cost breakdown, which makes comparison harder.

How should I plan around Chinese New Year?

Factories close for roughly two to four weeks around Chinese New Year and run at reduced efficiency for a fortnight either side. Build six to eight weeks of buffer into any programme whose production window touches it, and confirm the cut-off date for order placement early.

Why learn from a factory

These guides come from a working manufacturer in Huaibei, Anhui with roughly 500 employees and about 500,000 pieces of monthly capacity, running OEM & ODM bag manufacturing daily across eight categories and six material families.

We hold no certifications and claim none. What we can offer is what actually happens on a production floor.

Sourcing FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what buyers ask before the first order. The long-form versions live in the guides above.

How do I source bags from China?

Define your specification, shortlist manufacturers rather than trading agents, request quotations on identical specifications so they are comparable, order and physically approve a sample, then agree inspection and Incoterms before production begins. Ordering bulk from a quotation alone, without an approved sample, is the single most common and most expensive mistake.

How can I order bags directly from a manufacturer instead of a trading company?

Ask for the factory address and whether the goods are made on site, ask specific production questions a trading office cannot answer fluently (line count, in-house QC stages, material sourcing), and request a video walkthrough or a visit. Eighteen Craft publishes its address and capacity figures openly for exactly this reason.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom bags?

It varies widely between factories. Eighteen Craft takes orders from approximately 500 pieces per style, deliberately low so a brand can validate a design before committing capital. Custom-dyed materials or custom-tooled hardware raise the minimum.

Who is a good bag manufacturer in China for small and growing brands?

Look for flexible MOQ, genuine development support (ODM as well as OEM), documented quality control and honest answers about limitations. Headline capacity matters less than whether the factory will actually engage with a 500-piece test run — many large factories will not.
